Music has always been a huge part of my life from a young age. My mother was a violinist, conductor and violin teacher in Glasgow, and ran a local string orchestra called “Hillhead Strings”, as well as a Saturday music school. I can’t remember the exact age at which I started to “officially” learn the violin, but I was handling an instrument from at least the age of three. At 10 years old, I decided to try the viola and fell in love with its rich, sonorous tone.
I transitioned from the violin to the viola sections in my youth orchestras and was awarded the Wolfson Viola Scholarship to attend the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama Junior Department. I moved to London at 18 to study viola at The Royal College of Music with Margaret Major and Ivo Jan Van Der Werff.

My thoughts on teaching music
I first came across Stringbabies in 2014 while researching for new material and string teaching methodologies for very young children. It’s so vital for learning an instrument to be as enjoyable and accessible for children as possible, and Stringbabies ticks every box for me.
Musical experience
Since graduating, I went on to work as a freelance/ session violist, performing in a variety of platforms including Strictly Come Dancing, the X Factor and The Brit Awards as well as numerous String Quartet gigs. I started teaching the violin and viola during my studies at the RCM and it’s something I have always loved doing, even more so than performing. I have taught privately and in many schools in London over the past 25 years, and now that I have moved back to Scotland, I’m incredibly excited to start up a new cohort of students in and around my local area of Rhu, Helensburgh.
