Violinbabies and Petrea

Since recently having children I wanted to get more involved in teaching younger children and toddlers.  I was lucky to experience this wonderful magical world which was blown open by the birth of my son and more recently my daughter.  I sang to my little baby and before I knew it I noticed he was singing back from a very early age.  I decided to take my child along to lots of music classes for children and parents/guardians and was very aware of how amazingly absorbent young babies and toddlers can be and fascinated by the way this manifested itself unexpectedly at times.

I think that training up in Stringbabies is a great way forward for me and my children.  As I am quite new to this and have not started teaching officially, I anticipate with great excitement this new adventure and cannot wait to get my son his first violin for his 3rd birthday and start off by teaching him and a few other little ones nearby who have expressed an interested in learning violin too.

My thoughts on teaching music

I’m all about fun and challenges in an exciting way to help encourage and motivate the little ones and I like to lead by example and create lots of opportunities for little ones to aim for e.g. encouraging parents/guardians to support their children’s learning and practice and to attending good quality children’s concerts/theatre/opera pitched at their level.

I like to give lots and lots of praise when I see tiny steps of progress in children.  I am quite hands on if needs be but equally will work with the child’s own personality with the advise of their parents/guardians.

I also like to see others in practice and like to top up with my own training and practice and I like to mix in different styles – so what I have learnt from all my other teaching experiences will come into the mix including my recent intensive training in Colourstrings Kindergarten singing and songs which also has Kodaly methodologies as integral to the musicianship training which is similar in many ways to Stringbabies

Musical experience

I have taught as an instrumental strings instructor in Northern Ireland and Scotland.  I’ve also been a Primary Specialist music teacher and a Principal Music Teacher at Secondary Schools for over 21 years.

I trained as a singer and violinist at Royal Conservatoire of Music (Scotland) and also at the Royal Irish Academy of Music as a child.

I have also worked as a creative learning officer at Creative Scotland and worked on the Youth Music Initiative Programme for a number of years.

Currently, I sing professionally with a duo called La Seraphine and we have recorded some original material composed by duo partner guitarist Gordon Ferries.  I also play violin in this duo in some of the songs and arrangements (but not singing and playing at the same time!!)

I also sang with Edinburgh Festival Chorus for a number of years.

I played Argentinian tango with a Tango band and we played regularly for many years.

I’ve performed as a soloist (singer) for new commissions e.g. I was the soloist for a Requiem by Simon Thourmire –world premiere, commissioned at the opening concert for Celtic Connections in 2000 at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.

I’ve been recorded singing on Classic FM.

I’ve also done a lot of backing vocals and strings for various artists, including Martyn Bennett, Karen Wimhurst, Michael Marra and lots of other composers and arrangers.
