Cellobabies and Marie
I have used the Stringbabies method with great success with several very young students. It ignites their musical creativity with interaction and composition from the very beginning. The method can be tailored to suit each pupil and their character, allowing each lesson to be fluid and individually paced. Above all, the lessons are fun with plenty of ideas and activities to spark imagination and keep little ones entertained and focused.
My thoughts on teaching music
I believe that there’s no “one style to fit everyone”, so I tailor the lesson to suit the student, including elements of scales, sight-reading and musical knowledge to compliment the music we learn. Learning an instrument should be an exciting adventure, and always a fun and rewarding experience for the pupil and teacher.
Musical experience
I studied cello and piano at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama(now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) in Glasgow. I am currently Sub-Principal Cello in the Orchestra of Scottish Opera, a post I have held since 1997 – I love playing the music of the operatic repertoire so this is my dream job!
I am a cello instructor for East Renfrewshire Council at their Saturday Music Centre, teaching pupils from 7-17. I also teach cello, piano, music theory and aural training privately to students from beginner to grade 8 level. I am a cover musician at the Big Noise Sistema project in Stirling and Glasgow; I am called in when the full time staff are on leave and can be expected not only to teach cello and double bass, but also coach chamber ensembles, conduct the orchestra, assist with choir practice and teach musicianship classes – you have to hit the ground running but it’s most exciting and rewarding.
I am a founder member of the Drake Ensemble, a chamber music group; the concert series we established was conceived to play concerts “in the round” in an intimate drawing room setting, just as many of the pieces in this repertoire were intended. The concerts have gone from strength to strength and are now in their 4th year. We have also performed as a string quartet at Glasgow University, for the National Chamber Music Day 2018 and for the Skye Chamber Music Society.
