Violin & violababies and Katherine

Stringbabies is a unique way of introducing string playing to young children. It teaches notation in a fun way, develops the child’s listening skills and allows creative expression through composing. A wonderful way to start learning an instrument.

My thoughts on teaching music

Learning an instrument develops a huge range of skills, including motor skills, memory, expressing emotions, patience, perseverance, concentration, empathy and more, but best of all it is fun and provides a basis for developing friendships that can last a lifetime. I aim to provide an encouraging and friendly atmosphere for pupils, allowing them to develop at their own rate. I aim to develop the all round musician, using improvisation and small composition tasks as well as encouraging good technique and expressive playing. I encourage pupils to perform in my Christmas and summer concerts as well as offering the opportunity to take exams if they want to.

Musical experience

I began piano lessons at age 5 and started the violin aged 9. When I was 11, I gained a place at Trinity College Junior Department, London where I continued both violin and piano, played in orchestras, sung in choirs and had musicianship classes.

At 18 I gained a place at the Royal College of Music, studying with John Ludlow and Andrew Manze. After leaving college I returned to my home town of Bedford where I started teaching at Bedford School and Dame Alice (now Bedford Girls School).

In 2003 I moved to Oakham where I have established a busy and fulfilling teaching career in local schools and my own private practice. From the earliest opportunity I have always loved playing in orchestras and chamber groups. I am leader of the Rutland Sinfonia and guest leader of several orchestras in the East Midlands region.
