Music must be fun & collaborative. It doesn’t matter if you are playing your first open string duet with your teacher or playing in the biggest orchestra in the area, it is your relationships with the people you are working with who help you turn the notes on the page into music.
Cello, Violin & Violababies and Karen
I started Stringbabies Bedford in 2012 whilst working for the Bedford Music Service & saw much success before the service sadly lost it’s funding. Now living in Rutland I am looking to build on that success. There is nothing like Stringbabies to teach the fundamentals of music theory in a fun proactive environment which children cannot help but love.
My thoughts on teaching music
Not to say success is not important, but it is much more important to me that my pupils feel relaxed & happy making the progress they are capable of than it is to get them through the next grade exam. Exams should be available when they have a purpose beyond ticking off the next grade. Goals should include performing opportunities – my students play in pupil concerts, music festivals such as the Oundle Festival, Peterborough Youth Orchestra, Northampton Youth Orchestra, European Youth Music Orchestra etc but only when it is right for them. Other students prefer to play chamber music & aim to play somewhere more like the Britten Sinfonia Academy programme or even form their own rock band. Most importantly, pupils will be helped to find the music they love whilst being taught the technique they need to get there by somebody who truly cares about the whole child.
I play in orchestras both locally & nationally. You are just as likely to find me playing in Kent (with the Astor Palm Court Orchestra, Dartford or Sidcup Symphony). Locally with Nottingham Phil, Cambridge Easter Orchestra, Sampson Orchestra or St Ives Chamber Orchestra (which I lead). Or in the pit with Peterborough or Thrapston Plaza Opera. Having started learning with Fiona Mclean-Buechel (head of strings at Junior Trinity) then for many years taught by Sgt Roy Slade (Head of Strings at Kneller Hall & Bexley Music Centre) I then studied with Glyn Parfitt & Mike Thomas of the Brodsky Quartet where my love for all things ensemble grew.
My husband is a cellist & my daughter plays the oboe with the Britten Sinfonia Academy.
