Cello, Violin, Viola & Bassbabies and Gina

I came across Stringbabies totally by accident on Facebook and the rest is history!  I started investigating the program and fell in love with the method.  While never being a certified Suzuki instructor I had attended many workshops and used much of the technique with my students.  However I was never able to get beyond the problem of when to introduce note reading.

Kay’s method is absolutely genius and allows even the youngest student to begin unlocking the magic of reading music.  The program is full of so much fun and play, which is the essential vehicle of learning in the young child.  Children learn so much more than just how to play an instrument.  There are elements of composition so that the child is actively involved in the music rather than just reading what is on the page.  I am so excited to be a Stringbabies violin and cello instructor.

My thoughts on teaching music

I believe that music education should be made available to all children, beginning as early as possible.  Learning to play an instrument requires discipline, but it can and should be presented in a way that is individualized for the needs of each student.  My goals are always to inspire and impart the joy of music to all of my students.

Musical experience

Gina was born in Louisville, KY and began piano instruction at the age of five with her grandmother, a well-known piano teacher in Indiana where her family later moved.

At the age of ten Gina wanted to participate in her school band, but a string program was just getting started, and she was recruited to play the cello.  She immediately fell in love with the cello and has been playing for 53 years and teaching for 43 years.  Her high school cello instructors were all doctoral students of Janos Starker, so it was the logical transition to continue her cello studies at Indiana University where she graduated with her BME.

Her teaching experience has included private tutoring, public school string orchestra, and developing a string program in two communities through the Louisville Youth Orchestra, where she also conducted the two youngest groups. As a string orchestra instructor, she is well versed in violin, viola, and bass technique as well.  She has worked with students from ages 5 – 75 and loves sharing her passion for music with her students.

Gina moved to the Temecula, California area in August of 2016 and has continued her teaching with the Temecula Valley Youth Symphony and performing with the Temecula Valley Symphony.  She has performed professionally with the Louisville Orchestra.
